Hosted by Liverpool Artist Hilary Dron, this class is suitable for absolute beginners or those with some artistic experience looking to broaden their skills: perfect for creatives who enjoy depth, surface interest and tactile mark-making, this relaxed workshop will guide you through the process with demonstrations, discussion and plenty of hands-on experimentation.

Cold wax painting is a versatile technique where oil paint is mixed with a buttery paste made from beeswax, solvent and resin. Unlike encaustic painting, it requires no heat!

It increases the body of the paint, speeds drying, and allows for beautiful matte, textured, layered effects, as well as impasto, scraping and carving - you'll learn all about these techniques in the class. See plenty examples of Hilary's own work and how she got started with this expressive medium. 

Working on Arches oil paper, specially designed for oil paint, you will learn key artistic techniques including mixing cold wax with oil paint, working wet-in-wet, building layers, creating texture, developing composition, and using specialist tools such as palette knives, squeegees, brayers and other mark-making tools to manipulate the surface in different ways.

All materials are provided. You will leave with your own small seascape painting and a strong introduction to this exciting and versatile medium.
