A passion for me is to share my experience, personal artwork and techniques learnt over many years across various textile disciplines. In my teaching style, I provide an introduction to each medium including context and historical examples, then a short demonstration along with information about materials & equipment. You will then work mindfully along to music in a social setting with my guidance. You are encouraged to offer your own creative side however templates are always provided for those to focus on technique. You will leave the class filled with enthusiasm, confidence and the knowledge to continue your creative journey if you wish. I know this because this workshop had these results before and I love it!
Week 1 - 24th September - explore the ancient and deeply blue indigo skill of shibori (more traditional Japanese version of tie die) along with batik (hot wax layering and fabric painting) group split into 2 and swap over. We produce a series of small fabric samples and a cloth calico tote bag.
Week 2 - 1st October - a specialism for me is wet felting which I studied in Finland at the Crafts Academy Kuopio age 21 for a year. In this week I show fibre examples across plants and animals, explain the felting process older than any other textile technique and we will felt a small floral piece, also a small bowl (vessel for jewellery, air plants, bird nest..) Choose from over 20 shades of merino wool and various mohair yarn. Try out Catherine's drum carder.
Week 3 - 8th October - have fun with colour here with a range of fabric paints and fabric bases. Learn how to create a wash on a base (such as bag, tea towel. T shirt..) Cut a design into a small lino block or use the pre carved indian wood blocks to compose a repeat fabric composition.
Week 4 - 15th October - a lighthearted week with needlefelting, create a small bird like a robin or starling, also some halloween decorations......work with different wool quality, needle gauges and accessories.
