A creative workshop with Liverpool based Artist Catherine Carmyllie in her quirky artist studio space. Catherine has over 25 years experience teaching arts and crafts across many subjects such as drawing, painting mixed media, textile techniques like stitch, felt, dye, print.

Class 10:00 - 12:00

In this beginners class you will see lots of examples from previous students. Learn all about this historic and natural process from Catherine who discovered feltmaking in Finland at an arts academy where she studied over 20 years ago. She will teach you about fibres and how to use them. Complete a test sample before embarking on your luxury bird pod for your garden friends.

Felting occurs when natural fibres such as wool are exposed to water and friction. The fibres have scales which open up with water, closing down during the felting process to form a textile material. Felting is the oldest form of creating a fabric - a totally natural process with endless possibilities for creative projects. This simple process is similar to papier mache around a balloon - but with fibres resulting in a rigid nut/pod shape. Check out the video demonstration how to felt a bird pod here.

Choose form over 50 shades of wool fibres to compose your design then learn how to felt together. See and feel a huge fibre collection including hemp, linen, silks, possum, yak fibre....Catherine will show you how to finish your work to a professional standard with your pod ready to hang from a tree as soon as you get home.

Materials & kits will be available on the day to purchase for yourself or as gifts.

Suitable age 11 upwards supervised.
